Chapter 7: Elizabeth

Elizabeth could not help but marvel at the grandeur of Pemberley as their carriage wound its way up the long, tree-lined drive. The house itself appeared gradually through the foliage, its stone façade glowing warmly in the afternoon sun, its windows gleaming like diamonds against the backdrop of verdant hills. She had heard descriptions of the estate, of course—most notably from Caroline Bingley, whose effusive praise she had once discounted as mere flattery—but no words could have prepared her for the harmonious blend of natural beauty and architectural splendor that now unfolded before her.

“Oh, Lizzy!” Kitty exclaimed, pressing her face to the carriage window. “It is like a palace from a fairy story!”

“Indeed it is,” Mrs. Bennet agreed, her voice pitched higher than usual with excitement. “To think that we should be guests at such a place! I declare, I have never seen anything so fine, not even at Rosings Park when I visited your cousin Collins and Charlotte.”

“You have never visited Rosings Park, Mama,” Mary observed with her characteristic literalism. “Though I am certain it must be very grand as well.”

Elizabeth exchanged an amused glance with her father, who sat quietly observing his family’s reactions with thinly disguised entertainment. For her own part, Elizabeth felt a curious mixture of anticipation and trepidation as they approached the house. Two months had passed since she had last seen Mr. Darcy—two months in which she had replayed their conversations at Netherfield countless times in her mind, analyzing his words, his expressions, searching for what, precisely, she could not say.

The carriage came to a stop before the main entrance, where several servants stood at attention. As the footman opened the door and lowered the steps, Elizabeth glimpsed two figures waiting at the top of the broad stone staircase—Mr. Darcy himself, standing tall and straight beside a slender young woman who could only be his sister.

“Welcome to Pemberley,” Mr. Darcy said as they ascended the steps, his voice carrying the same rich timbre she remembered. His eyes met hers briefly as he spoke, a flash of warm recognition that sent an unexpected flutter through her chest before his gaze moved politely to include the rest of her family.

“We are most grateful for your invitation, Mr. Darcy,” Mr. Bennet replied, making the introductions with his usual dry courtesy.

Elizabeth watched as Mr. Darcy greeted each member of her family in turn, his manners impeccable if somewhat reserved. He showed particular kindness to her father, which touched her, and maintained perfect civility toward her mother and younger sisters despite Mrs. Bennet’s effusive exclamations about the magnificence of Pemberley.

“And may I present my sister, Miss Georgiana Darcy,” he said, a note of unmistakable pride softening his voice.

The young woman beside him curtsied gracefully, her posture suggesting a natural shyness that she was making a visible effort to overcome. “I am very pleased to meet you all,” she said, her voice soft but clear. “My brother has spoken most warmly of his time at Netherfield.”
